before we get too old

December 2, 2006

dark drive in the back seat
forehead against the post
watching out.

white world with earth-bound stars
christmas lights
and headlights
and door lights.

breathing smoke,
i can’t quite see through the fog
to the other side.

i know it’s there,
but i’m too afraid to reach up
and wipe away my own breathing.

hesitantly,
augustine
